Review: The Greatest Thing That Almost Happened by Don Robertson October 11, 2009
Description:
If there was one genuine truth that Morris Bird III thought he understood, it was that the world forever and relentlessly changed. But only in one direction—from simple to complicated.
When he was nine, Morris Bird III learned the meaning of bravery. Now, at seventeen, he’s on the verge of adulthood . . . and he’s fallen in love. But it’s 1952 and the Korean War hangs over his head like a dangling sword—and his prickly, complicated relationship with his cold and silent father has never been satisfactorily resolved. When Morris’s own mortality stares him in the face, he learns what it truly means to become a man.
The Greatest Thing That Almost Happened is the final book in Don Robertson’s classic trilogy featuring one of the most endearing characters in American literature.
When I picked up this book, I wasn’t aware of several things:
a.) It is the final book of a trilogy following the life of Morris Bird III
b.) The book was actually written in 1970
c.) It’s regarded as a classic by a lot of people
That being said, it was pretty hard for me to emotionally connect to the character of Morris, maybe because I hadn’t taken the journey of the previous two books with him. The story is definitely well-written, but I felt like I was missing out on several key events that took place prior to this chunk of the story; I assume they were explained in the prior books, but not having read them I’m not sure.
I recommend The Greatest Thing That Almost Happened if simply for the fact that Robertson’s style of writing was simultaneously easygoing yet intriguing. Just be sure to read the other two books (The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread and the Sum and Total of Now) first.

They don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. October 9, 2009
So, at my new job I was lucky enough to (randomly) get a corner desk with ample room (and encouragement!) to decorate it.
…..mistake, superiors. Mistake! :p
Just kidding. I’m very excited. Last night I printed off 20some pictures of family, friends, and concert photography at Target. I also have a few sony posters that I’m gonna hang (maybe on the inside lower portion… can’t decide yet!) plus little things I picked up at Target. Aannnd I’m getting a plant that I (hopefully) won’t kill.
Could this be a successful merging of our two worlds?
Quite a controversial mouse pad, apparently. October 8, 2009
haleyluvsguster (8:11:43 PM): So I just went desk-supply shopping at Target. Alone. Big effing red flags should be exploding in your head.
TiahnaLeigh (8:13:20 PM): yes. there are big fucking red flags EVERYWHERE
TiahnaLeigh (8:13:28 PM): can’t believe you went wiffout me
haleyluvsguster (8:14:05 PM): haha nooo, it was not a riveting trip. It was originally to print some pics.
haleyluvsguster (8:14:16 PM): And then somehow I found myself picking up a Hello Kitty mousepad.
TiahnaLeigh (8:14:29 PM): HELLO KITTY?!?
TiahnaLeigh (8:14:30 PM): HALEY!
haleyluvsguster (8:14:33 PM): BAHAHAHHAHAHAW
TiahnaLeigh (8:14:37 PM): RYLEIGH is too old for hello kitty
TiahnaLeigh (8:14:41 PM): hello kitty is … acky.
haleyluvsguster (8:14:50 PM): It’s not like garish.
haleyluvsguster (8:15:03 PM): It’s … understated. Just pink with “HK” and bows
TiahnaLeigh (8:15:09 PM): that’s not possible. it’s hello fucking kitty

Song of the Day: “Cherry Tulips” by Headlights
(This has totally been the song of the day before, but I’m in LOVE with it… and it’s a good fall song, even though tulips are long past blooming.)
